BROOCH 199771

BROOCH 199771
Description: Fragment of Roman copper alloy Trumpet Brooch, consisting of the head and part of the upper bow only. The head loop is missing, as is the spring mechanism and pin. The head is oval in shape, measuring 26.5x17mm. To the reverse is a rectangular depression for the spring (behind the bow projection) measuring 8.9x6.2x2mm. It is C-shaped in section. On one side the lug which would have held the axis bar has broken across the piercing. On the other side, the lug is missing altogether and next to it a wire loop has been inserted c.4mm in diameter (internal 2mm). It is visible to the front of the head where the wire ends have been turned outwards to secure it. The bow is oval in section, measuring 8.7x7.4mm where it extends from the head. This narrows over 19mm to 6.9x5.5mm at the break. No original patina remains and the metal is pitted and corroding. There is edge damage around the top of the head. Measures 22x26.5mm and weighs 7.39g.
