BUCKLE 180165
Description: A slightly corroded single-looped sub-rectangular buckle of post-medieval date. The strap bar is narrowed and recessed; the frame protrudes slightly beyond the strap bar on either side. The bar is rectangular in cross-section. The iron pin has corroded in situ at one end. At the ends of the pin bar the frame is moulded, the knop divided from the rest of the frame by a groove. From the pin bar (W.: 29.75mm) the buckle narrows to a waist (W.: 27.55mm) before expanding to a maximum width at the outer edge. The curved outer edge is externally bevelled and travels down to a rebate groove; on the lower surface it is concave. The internal side of the outer edge has a central bilobed protrusion within which the pin would have sat originally. The buckle now has a dull mid-green/brown patina. A parallel can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 29; ref. 157). Whitehead only offers a wide date range presumably due to the lack of stratified examples.
