BUCKLE 178949

BUCKLE 178949
Description: An incomplete cast pewter buckle of post-medieval date. The frame of the buckle is rectangular with rounded corners in plan with two central drilled holes in which an iron axis bar sits. The pin protruding from one side of the bar is now vestigial, as is the sub-triangular chape on the other side, as a result of corrosion. In profile the frame is bowed. Centrally positioned on each of the outer edges are two moulded pin rests with central transverse grooves; these are decorated with leaf shaped patterns. The frame is otherwise plain. The buckle is a dull grey in colour with some small areas of patina removal. Similar buckles can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 98) Whitehead suggests that these buckles date from the period 1660 to 1720 AD, and were used as shoe or knee buckles (hence the curved profile).
