PENANNULAR RING 176711
Description: CORONER'S REPORT Description of object A small, plain late Bronze Age penannular ring (c. 1150-750 BC) with plump oval cross-section. Some lifting at the terminals indicates that the piece comprises a gold covering over a base metal core. The ring bears decorative stripes of yellow and paler gold, but the decoration is extremely worn except where protected in the centre. Composition Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface indicated that the yellow stripes have a gold content of approximately 78% and silver content of approximately 19%, the remainder being copper. The pale stripes are richer in silver, with correspondingly lower gold content, but similar copper content. The ring weighs 7.71 grams and at the damaged ends the green corrosion of a base metal core is visible.
