VESSEL 162849

VESSEL 162849
Description: Incomplete copper alloy handle, presumably from a vessel or cup, and Roman in date. It has broken across the main part of the handle, where it is D-shaped in section with a flat underside and curving other side. Here it is 7mm wide and 4.3mm thick. In profile the handle curves outwards then inwards, all the while tapering and thinning, to an unbroken end 3.9mm wide and 0.9mm thick. This section is much flatter than the remainder of the handle and it would have been here it was attached to the vessel or cup. Along each long side of the handle are tiny horizontal grooves c.4mm apart, in decroation. In addition the flat part of the handle appears to have three or four horizontal incised lines running edge to edge, spaced closely together. The patina is mostly middle-green and smooth, but the outside part of the handle in particular has a much lighter corrosion obscuring some of the surface. The incomplete handle is 45.4mm in length and weighs 5.45g.
