BROOCH 161094

BROOCH 161094
Description: Roman cast copper alloy plate brooch. The upper surface of the lozenge shaped plate is decorated with 25 lozenge shaped cells arranged in rows. Alternate rows are filled with a blue enamel, while the remaining cells are now empty. The edge of the brooch is worn, and small triangular cells are barely visible along three of the four edges. The visible cells are filled with blue enamel. The two corners on the longer sides of the brooch are worn, probably worn breaks from missing terminals. The other corners have rounded terminals. One terminal is semi-circular and the decoration is obsured by corrosion. The other terminal is sub-rectangular with a rounded end and has four moulded grooves across its width. Behind the shorter terminal are two incomplete integrally cast parallel lugs which would have held the hinged pin. The reverse of the other terminal has a worn and incomplete integrally cast catchplate. The brooch has an even mid-green patina. It is 53.74mm long, 28.23mm wide and is 3.02mm thick, increasing to 17.18mm to include the pin lug.
