STIRRUP 153711

STIRRUP 153711
Description: An early-medieval stirrup-strap mount of 11th-century date. This hexagonal mount is an incomplete example of a class A, type 3 mount, depicting a degenerate form of a central human figure with arms and legs apart, bound by serpants. See Williams p38 figure 26 no 74. There is a worn break at the apex of the mount where an integral attachment loop would have been located. There is a circular rivet hole in both of the lower corners of the mount, located above the flange. The flange is sub-triangular and is at a right angle to the main surface of the mount. The strap mount has a dark redish-brown patina and is very worn. The reverse has some darker black-brown staining, particularly between the rivet holes. It is 46.67mm long, 28.63mm wide and 4.52mm thick. The thickness of the mount increases to 7.62mm at the flange end.
