SEAL MATRIX 149304

SEAL MATRIX 149304
Description: A cast copper-alloy post-medieval seal matrix of conical form. On the reverse a low cone rises to a slightly off-centre handle which expands and flattens to accommodate a transverse line of two circular perforations, then tapers again to a single larger circular perforation at the top. The uppermost perforation in this trilobate loop has broken through. The die is sub-oval, measuring 14.7mm by 13.7mm. Its lettering is aligned to the widest part of the suspension loop. In intaglio are two large letters, 'W' and 'M' when looking at the die, 'MW' on the seal. Centrally, above and below the initials, is a ?six-pointed star; the whole is within a border. The lettering and form suggest a c. 17th-century date for this seal matrix. A similar object can be found illustrated in Read (2001, 76, 81; ref. 622).
