BUCKLE 141701
Description: A small, worn and corroded but complete cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of late medieval to early post-medieval date. The frame is formed of a pair of ovals that incurve towards the pin bar. Around the pin bar a tapering pin survives of thick bent wire construction. On the upper surface the frame is bevelled round the outer edge; it is also bevelled on the parallel surface on its lower surface giving it the shape of a parallelogram with rounded corners in cross-section. No real decoration can be discerned beyond the corrosion, a light green dusty deposit over an orange-brown metal. One can see that the buckle has been bent in profile, upwards on both outer edges, perhaps imitating the curve of an item of clothing or footwear. Buckles of this size with double oval frames have been found in late medieval contexts (cf. Egan and Pritchard 1991, 82-83; refs. 337-339), but as the form persists a later date cannot be ruled out.
