SEAL MATRIX 141662

SEAL MATRIX 141662
Description: A cast lead object in the form of a pointed oval, resembling a seal matrix. The obverse is flat with some pitting and inconsistencies; there is no discernible legend. The upper face is bevelled, recessed at the top with a central median rib which travels for 20.8mm down its length. Where the midrib begins, at the end of the oval, the object reaches a maximum thickness of 9mm. The form of the object and its inconsistencies, which also include a lack of perforation as a suspension loop through the thickest part, suggest that this may have been a trial piece for a medieval seal matrix, or perhaps a pattern for a casting mould.
