STRAP FITTING 140440
Description: A worn fragment from a cast copper-alloy mounted fastener from an early post-medieval sword belt. The object consists of the lower part of the body and the circular terminal. The terminal is affixed to the body, which tapers underneath. The circular element is decorated on its visible, upper surface by a floral or solar pattern of central dot with curved lines radiating out. The main body consists of a series of points incurving to waists: two waists and one point exist on this fragment. At the wide point is a central rivet hole; orange corrosion product on the recessed reverse indicates that the rivet would have been made of iron. The upper surface of the body would have been decorated with a foliate pattern, now worn. An identical mount from Dorset is illustrated by Read (2006, 6; ref. 18), who describes it as a 'male member of a...toggle fastener'.
