HOOKED TAG 140414

HOOKED TAG 140414
Description: An incomplete cast copper-alloy hooked tag dating to the post-medieval period. The artefact is worn and has lost its curved hook, although the body and rectangular attachment loop survive intact (though slightly bent in the case of the latter). The body consists of a central berry-like cross-hatched motif in a V-shaped moulding surrounded by an openwork rosette; there is a small fleur-de-lys motif at the edge of the loop. The reverse is flat, and is only punctuated by the seven perforations of the openwork rosette: four on one side of the central lobe, and three on the other (the 'fourth' was never perforated). The metal is a red-brown colour with areas of light green corrosion dusting on the upper surface in particular. This design of hooked tag has been found in a context dated by ceramic evidence to the late 16th century in London (Egan 2005, 44; ref. 153), and an early 17th-century context in Norwich (Margeson 1993, 17; ref. 72). Egan (2005, 44) also refers to similar examples found in the Netherlands. Many such can also be found on this database: see " Images, typing 'hooked tag' in the filter box.
