DAGGER 136750
Description: Late medieval/ early post medieval copper alloy dagger chape with separate backplate (of thin metal, 0.3mm thick). The chape has a rounded bottom from which a knop extends, with scallop decoration in the form of radiating grooves from an openwork tri-lobe, in the centre and towards the top of the scallop. Above this it has slightly sloping sides 15mm long to an openwork edge with four V shapes cut into it. At the centre, above a rib (which lies at the top of the tri-lobe) is an openwork heart. The front of the chape is rounded (and 1.2mm thick), while the back is flat. The backplate is slightly twisted and damaged. An identical example from Lincolnshire, missing its backplate, can be seen in Read 2001 (Metal Artefacts of Antiquity, Volume One) p.90, fig.58, no.685. Late 15th/ 16th century in date. Measures 37.1x24.6mm and weighs 9.90g.
