BROOCH 113739
Description: Copper alloy Roman T-Shaped enamelled Brooch. The wings are long and tubular (L. 31.6mm. D. 6mm). There is some evidence of decoration along the top of the wings, although this is now worn and unclear, and there are two parallel vertical grooves on the front of the wings at each end. A small section of the pin survives on the reverse of the wings. The upper surface of the bow is slightly convex and the sides are straight. The bow tapers from head to foot (W. 8.9-5mm). The upper surface of the bow is highly decorated. There is a longitudinal groove down the length of the bow on each side. At the head of the bow there is a triangular motif defined by an incised border. Beneath this are a series of recessed cells of varying shapes which would originally have held enamel, some of which survives. The uppermost cell is an inverted triangle with an incised border, placed slightly off-centre, which retains traces of red enamel. Beneath this is a circular cell, then a triangular cell with an incised border. Finally there are four sub-rectangular cells with incised borders, the first and third of which retain traces of red enamel. At the foot of the bow there is a round foot knob which projects forward and expands to a flat terminal with a sub-circular recess slightly off-centre (D. 4-6.3mm). The catchplate is intact on the reverse.
