STRAP FITTING 113073

Description: Copper alloy mount fragment, probably from a sword belt. At one end of the mount there is a rectangular section with a central rectangular aperture and a circular loop extending from one side. The two long sides of the rectangular frame are slightly convex on the upper surface with flat reverses so that they are D-shaped in section. The short edges are thicker than the long edges. One of the short edges is convex forming a small arch between the two long edges. The upper surface of this edge is also convex and has moulded rope decoration, now badly worn. The other short edge is not convex but is D-shaped in section. The upper surface is badly worn so that any decoration is now unclear. From here the object extends into a recessed plate which appears to have originally had openwork elements but is broken off so that the form is unclear. There is a small rivet hole in this section. The reverse is flat and undecorated. Patchy green patina.
