VESSEL 1027287
Description: An incomplete pottery jar or flagon, probably of early medieval date (Anglo-Saxon). The rim is missing. The body forms a pronounced waist and terminates in a flat base. On one side is a large area of post-depositional damage, and on the base are two large scars from recent damage. The vessel appears to be hand-made or slow-wheel thrown, with wiping marks around the circumference of the body near the base and the waist, and is undecorated. The walls are thick-bodied and the fine grey-black fabric contains rare rounded black inclusions, with patches of buff sandwich core.
This is likely to be a product of one of the Hampshire ceramic industries.
Height: 95mm. Diameter (body, max): 105mm. Diameter (base): 65mm. Diameter (neck): 35mm. Weight: 475g.
