VESSEL 1020972

VESSEL 1020972
Description: A fragment of a wheel thrown coarseware closed form vessel, probably a jar, dating to the Roman period, c. AD 200-400. The fragment is a base fragment, namely a foot ring, and is markedly unfinished on its flattened underside. It has a thickly curving rounded edge to the base, and above this are two cordons with a deep channel between them, in which further slender incised lines lie. It is made of a pale buff oxidised fabric, which nonetheless maintains a slender strip of grey at its core. It is micaceous, with a slightly sandy texture on the inner surface. There are traces of a darker red brown slip covering retained in the grooves and wheel marks. Potentially an example of Oxfordshire ware. Measurements: 66.1mm length, 35.0mm width, 9.8mm wall thickness, 7.2mm base thickness, weight 56.19g
Date: 200 - 400
