BROOCH 1020663
Description: An incomplete copper alloy initial T-shaped brooch of T135 dating to the Roman period, c. AD 50-150.
The wings and upper part of the bow survive. The wings are cylindrical in shape, with an outer layer of copper alloy wrapped around the internal hinge bar. This is visible in the damaged terminal of the left wing, and missing in the damaged terminal of the right wing. At the centre is a v-shaped notch where the hinge would have originally been placed. The bow rises at a gentle angle from the arms, and is decorated with two horizontal grooves which give it a ribbed appearance and tactile feature. There is a further raised triangle demarcated by further grooves at the point at which the bow meets the arms. The bow begins to angle downwards to the break.
Bayley and Butcher (2004: 127) no. 131 is similar in its use of a triangular decoration in this position, and the form of the bar and arms. The ribbing effect is potentially another of the South Western innovations and variations on this form.
Measurements: 20.3mm length, 19.8mm width of arms, 8.2mm width of bow, 3.8mm thickness, weight 5.74g.
Date: 50 - 150
