Dilamgerbendi Insula

Dilamgerbendi Insula
Hardcastle, p. 132
Description:

House occupied by the Rev. John Kershaw Craig (1802-89), the first Vicar of Burley who declined to live at the Vicarage built for him. in 1872 and lived here until his death in 1889. Hardcastle, p. 133: ‘The puzzle of this extraordinary name has only just been solved. Mr. Brian Vesey-Fitzgerald, a recognised authority on the Romany language says the word is a corruption of “Delombro Bengi”,meaning “the Hammerman of the Devil”. So it was the name the Gypsies gave to the owner, not the place. Whether or not Mr Craig realised this is uncertain. Probably he did not as it was not meant as a compliment! ... To this picturesque “place-name” he added “Insula”, [she says] as the Isle of Wight could be seen from the roof!’ [But I think it might have been because the house looks a bit like a Roman city block or ‘insula’.]
