Description:

Mrs Bowden-Smith writes at length about Carey’s. It was once held by John Carey, Riding-Forester to Charles II. Mrs Bowden-Smith’s husband Richard’s father ‘came there about 1779’. She says that ‘the Bowdens are a very ancient family from Cornwall, and those who are still alive are Roman Catholic priests’. At this point the house was called Brockenhurst Lodge and was on a site slightly to the south of where Careys now stands. ‘The eldest brother, Nathaniel, settled at the old house at Brockenhurst, married Miss Ripley and had 12 children who all grew up ... On the death of their father in 1886, the old house was pulled down to our great [p. 35] regret, and [the Rev.] Hermann Bowden-Smith has built a fine new house.’ Hermann’s eldest brother was Philip, who was a Assistant Master at Rugby for 43 years. [The Times, 3 June 1895.] Another brother, Nathaniel, went into the Navy and rose to Admiral, being knighted in 1897. [The Times, 22 June 1897.]
