Description:

Eighteenth-century house remodelled in the French chateau style by Thomas Henry Wyatt (1807-80) for John Morant (1825-99), who succeeded his father as Lord of the Manor of Brockenhurst in 1857. Morant also made improvements to the parkland and gardens, renowned before the Great War.Historical development, by the Morant family, is described in detail in the English Heritage listing. Remodelled by John Morant (1825-1899) despite falling revenues from sugar plantations, down from £20,000 in the late C18th to £10,000 by 1880 .From HRO 6M80 Additional deposit: In 1759, an Edward Morant moved to England from Jamaica, where the family had extensive estates. He bought Brockenhurst House and estate in 1770, and his son John Morant, purchased the Manor of Ringwood, from Henry 8th Lord Arundell, in 1794. Death duties, on the death of his great grandson Edward Morant in 1910, forced the family to sell the Ringwood properties in 1916. Many of the Brockenhurst estates were sold in 1951 and 1959. Bilikoski p. 38 At Brockenhurst the gardens were set out in the 1890s for John Morant. The gardens were widely photographed by W.J. Day about 1906 ... they appeared in Country Life in 1901. .. and were painted by G.S Elgood ... All these show what must have been one of the finest Italianate gardens of the period. Statues and topiary abound; there was a Dutch garden, yew avenues and a broad central canal with urns and steps at the end furthest from the house, which led up to a terrace.
