Walhampton

Walhampton

Description:

The house dates from Elizabethan times. It came into the Burrard family by purchase in 1668, and remained in that family until the estate was sold in 1884. Sir Harry Neale (more properly, Sir Harry Burrard-Neale; he took the name Neale on his marriage in 1795 to Grace Neale) was born in 1765. He became an Admiral of the White during the Napoleonic Wars, and represented the Borough of Lymington in Parliament for 46 years. He died in 1840: the Egyptian obelisk in the grounds of the house is a memorial to him. The house was in a poor state of repair by the early twentieth century and was substantially rebuilt by Lady St Cyres. It was sold in 1948 and became Walhampton School.
