The old Ship Inn, enlarged and modernized by Henry Forster, Conservative politician, later Baron Forster of Lepe. Bought by Lionel de Rothschild in 1918. Widnell, p. 382:‘Owing to the war, the choir boys had to be content to have an outing at Lepe [in 1918?], where Mrs Peech kindly allowed them to walk through the gardens and have tea on the verandah. This Mrs Peech was in all probabliltity the wife of Mr James Peech of Steel, Peech and Tozer, the steel magnates, who took the House on the Shore at Beaulieu not long afterwards, and then purchased Thorns Beach.’ Photo 1950s.
