TNA SC 8/32/1580

Author: Abbot and convent of Beaulieu
Description: The Abbot and convent of Beaulieu state that King John, founder of their house, granted them the site of their house and other lands and tenements in the New Forest, in perpetual alms, because of which they have had common right of pasture in the forest at all times of the year for all animals except goats, without having a special clause in their charter for this: and as a result new ministers of the forest often obstruct them in this right. They request an inquisition into whether the king can grant them his charter for this right, without damage to himself, the forest, or others.
