Description: The estate was conveyed, 18, 19 Nov. 1726, from William Collins of Wandsworth, co. Surrey, tallow chandler, and Ann, his wife (one of the daus. and co-heiresses of John Strugnall, late of Goring, yeo., dec'd), to John Holcombe of Goring, yeo., in consideration of £200 (nos. WISTON/437, 438), and the conveyance was followed by a deed, 5 May 1727, to lead the uses of a fine (no. WISTON/439), which was levied in the Easter Term, 1727 (no. WISTON/440). A part of the above property (1½a.) was leased, 30 Nov. 1733, from the said John Holcombe to John Hills of Ashurst, brickmaker, for 10 years, at the yearly rent of £5. 10s. (no. WISTON/441), while the property as a whole, together with two tenements (one new-built and known by the sign of the Green Dragon; see nos. WISTON/469-496) was mortgaged, with bond, 19 Dec. 1734, from the said John Holcombe to Nicholas Roberts of Brighton, mariner, for 500 years, to secure repayment of £200 and interest (nos. WISTON/442, 443). The mortgage was assigned, again with bond, 2 Sept. 1741, by Mary Roberts of Brighton, widow and executrix of the said Nicholas Roberts, and by said John Holcombe, to Nenyon Masters of New Shoreham, gent. (nos. WISTON/444, 445). John Holcombe, and Elizabeth his wife, conveyed their entire interest in the property, 19, 20 Jan. 1742/3, to Walter Holcomb of Cuckfield, yeo., in consideration of £100, and another £200 to be paid to the said Nenyon Masters (nos. WISTON/446, 447), and the conveyance was strengthened by a final concord (nos. WISTON/448, 449); the said Walter Holcomb conveyed the estate, 21, 22 March 1755, to James Brigden of Cuckfield, yeo., who had married Susan Holcomb, niece of the said Walter (nos. WISTON/450, 451). Brigden mortgaged the property, 23 April 1755, to William Unwins of Cuckfield, yeo., for £250, with bond (nos. WISTON/452, 453) and then, following articles of agreement (no. WISTON/454) conveyed it, 22, 23 April 1757, to John Peto of Steyning, bricklayer, in consideration of £30, and another £270 to be paid to William Unwins (nos. WISTON/455, 456), who assigned the residue of the mortgage term to John Wheeler of Steyning, sadler, to attend the inheritance (no. WISTON/457). There is a deed to lead the uses of a fine, 5 May 1757, between James and Susan Brigden and John Peto (no. WISTON/458); the latter mortgaged the estate, 9 July 1779, to Aaron Winton of Itford in Beddingham, gent., as security for £500 borrowed from the mortgagee by Jeremy Peto of Steyning, common brewer, only son of the mortgagor, and the deed is endorsed with an assignment of the mortgage, 15 Jan. 1780, to Cruttenden Weller of Lewes, gent. (no. WISTON/459). The property was conveyed, 18, 19 Jan. 1802, by John Peto of Lewes, carpenter (son of said Jeremy Peto), and others, to Hugh Penfold of Staplefields in Steyning, yeo., and his trustees, and the residue of the mortgage term was assigned to attend the inheritance (nos. WISTON/460, 461). The said Hugh Penfold mortgaged the estate, 6 May 1817, to Henry Verrall of Steyning, gent., for £300 (no. WISTON/462). Letters of administration, 11 Dec. 1830, were granted to Peter Marchant Lashmar of Steyning, miller, in respect of the effects of John Wheeler, dec'd (see no. WISTON/457), limited to the residue of a mortgage term of 1,000 years (no. WISTON/463), and an assignment and surrender of terms affecting the property was made, 27 Dec. 1830, by the said Peter Marchant Lashmar and others to Hugh Penfold and Nicholas Waller (no. WISTON/464). Hugh Penfold conveyed the estate, 28, 29 Dec. 1830, to the trustees under the will, 26 Aug. 1825, of the late Charles Goring of Wiston Park, in consideration of £730 (nos. WISTON/465, 466); with the conveyance is the sworn deposition, 29 Dec. 1830, of Thomas Lashmar of Steyning (aged 84), as to the heirship of John Peto of Steyning, bricklayer (no. WISTON/467).
