Occupation: Clerk to the Guardians of the Southwell Union; Assistant Poor Law Commissioner; relieving officer; auditor. Places mentioned: Wellow. Corporations: Poor Law Commission. Content: Folios 367-368. Letter from Thomas Marriott, Clerk to the Guardians of the Southwell Union, to the Poor Law Commission, stating the case of Ann Cox of Wellow and reported at a meeting of 18 April [1837]. Lord Manvers chaired the meeting with 39 guardians, Edward Gulson, [Assistant Poor Law Commissioner] and 2 visitors. The case was referred by the relieving officer.. Ann Cox, crippled, aged 41, has had a leg amputated and cannot work except with a needle. She has 3 children; Jane Cox, Ann Cox and Betsey Cox aged 10, 8 and 6 respectively. Her husband deserted her and went to America 6 years ago. She became chargeable to the parish and continued to receive relief until disallowed by the auditor as contrary to the regulations of the Poor Law Commission. There is an order made on this report that she should have 2/- a week and a stone of bread as outdoor relief. This was obeyed by the relieving officer but the auditor has struck out the payment. The case was brought to the notice of the board on 15 November 1837 and they are of the opinion that the order was justified. They ask that the auditor be directed that this is right. Annotation, Mr Gulson for his opinion. He states the case should be allowed. The auditor did his duty correctly, but it is an extreme case and the commission should sanction relief. The case was fully discussed and it is decided that relief should be given. The Commission will not object. Write accordingly, the order was made. The guardians are all sympathetic towards the woman and it is desirable to sanction relief..
