Description: 1 collective petition (22 people, from Fawley, Hampshire including clergy, gentlemen and yeomanry) on behalf of Samuel Bundy, Richard Lane, Charles Bratcher, John Webb, Robert Cull and William Lane, convicted at Hampshire Special Assizes in December 1830, for conspiracy and riot to raise wages in November 1830. There is also a covering letter from the visiting magistrates (Lord Cavan, Berkeley Drummond, Fulford, Willis and Drummond) of Winchester gaol enclosing petition and recommending release of prisoners dated 10 September 1831. A letter from B Herring, keeper of County Bridewell gaol, Winchester advising on bad behaviour of Samuel Bundy and Charles Bratcher and advising against releasing Bundy early, dated 24 September 1831. A letter from H M Drummond of Cadland to Home Secretary asking him not to take action until the magistrates have had a meeting, dated 27 September 1831. A letter from Mr Phillipps in reply to Drummond's letter dated 28 September 1831. Another letter from B Herring, keeper of County Bridewell advising of Bundy and Bratcher's bad character, dated 28 September 1831. A letter from the Visiting Magistrates advising that they have held a meeting and decided that Bundy and Bratcher are undeserving of any mitigation of punishment, dated 29 September 1831. Grounds for clemency: realise that they have acted 'in opposition to the laws of the land', deserved to be punished and will act in an orderly fashion in the future. Initial sentence: Samuel Bundy and Richard Lane - 18 months imprisonment; Charles Bratcher and John Webb - 12 months imprisonment; Robert Cull and William Lane - 9 months imprisonment. Annotated: Cull and W Lane to be discharged, Webb after 10 months imprisonment, R Lane after 12 months imprisonment [Bundy and Bratcher's names have been crossed off]. GQ 67.
