Description: a) William Sneath, aged forty nine, Collector of Customs at Hythe. Saw scallop approach the shore at Shornecliffe [Cheriton] and suspected smuggling. Tried to seize goods for Commonwealth, but assaulted by party of about twelve. b) Josias Swaffer, aged thirty five, of Folkestone, assistant to Sneath. Further details of above. Thomas Ungly among the smugglers, all armed with long staves. c) Edward Carter, aged thirty four, of Hythe, assistant to Sneath. Tried to fire 'a small birding piece' as instructed, but knocked down
