Case, and opinion by Edward Cranford and Dr. Addams

Description: Correspondence (mainly between the 4th Earl, Burrell Hayley, rector of Catsfield, and Ashurst Turner Gilbert, bishop of Chichester), and notes concerning the failure of Hayley to observe a promise to vacate the living of Catsfield when he inherited the advowson of Brightling. Hayley presented his younger brother, John Burrell Hayley, to Brightling and remained at Catsfield himself. The Earl had no legal remedy to enforce his interpretation of the promise.
