Creator: Bell, Arthur, George
Description: painting, oil painting, on canvas, Sheep Grazing on Hengistbury Head, painted by Arthur G Bell, c1900
Notes: Bell specialised in landscapes and was recognised as an artist of quality during his lifetime, exhibiting at the Royal Academy (to which he was elected in 1911) and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
Although Bell was based in London he painted in France and Germany as well as locations closer to home. He produced, in the period immediately prior to the First World War, a number of paintings for use on advertising posters by what is now Transport for London, illustrating places of natural beauty and interest that could be reached via the Underground.
Our collection includes works painted by Bell in the New Forest although he also worked in the West Country. His wife, Nancy Meugens, was a travel writer and Bell illustrated a number of her books.
