Canterton Manor House
Description:
Canterton was an ancient manor (originally a vaccary), owned from 1703 to 1887 by the marquess of Winchester. In 1887 the fifteenth marquess, John Henry Beaumont, put the whole estate up for sale. The sales particulars outline three or four sites for mansions and ornamental water. Unfortunately the plan was not realised: there was only one buyer, Mr. John Jeffreys (1846-1922), who built a new house on a different site. Mrs Jeffreys died 1946, after which the house was put up for sale.
