Description: Folios 54-55. Letter from Robert Hyde Greg, cotton manufacturer, former MP for Manchester, to the Poor Law Commissioners, who observes from proceeding in the House of Commons that the Commmissioners are being asked to publish his letter of 1834, recommending emigration of surplus labour in the southern agricultural counties to northern manufacturing districts. He states that his letter was written to Edwin Chadwick, secretary to the Commissioners, in a personal capacity and that he understood letters remained property of the author. The expansion of the manufacturing districts and need for additional labour presented an opportunity of using Irish labour or labour from other parts of England, to the benefit of both master and worker, instead of agricultural labourers facing the prospect of the workhouse or imprisonment.
