Description: John Clevland. Captain Hale, late Commander of the Badger Sloop, asked for the person appointed to act as Master's Mate, to be paid as such. The instructions allow a Master's Mate to sloops with complements of 100-60 men but no sloops of war are allowed them. Several Captains have borne them and opine the Mate should be paid as such.
