Description: Report of Nash Grose on James Cockett, labourer at Lymington in Hampshire, convicted at the Hampshire Quarter Sessions in Winchester, on 9 January 1787, for stealing lead from a house in Boldre. There is also a covering letter from Grose. Grounds for clemency: magistrates had given the wrong sentence and the 7 months in prison he had already served was deemed sufficient for his crime. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: free pardon.
