Description: Folios 556-557. To: The Local Government Act Office. From: George Bailey, Clerk to the Luton Local Board, 3 Union Street, Luton [Bedfordshire]. Subject Matter: Letter acknowledging receipt of a letter of the 20 July 1869, enclosing a copy of a letter from J Rudd received from the Home Secretary complaining of the deposit of night soil near to the union workhouse and certain cottages on the Dallow Lane, Luton. Bailey confirms that he has directed the attention of the Inspector of Nuisances to this matter and that it appears that there is a very small deposit of night soil at the locality, which is at least a quarter of a mile from the union workhouse and 200 yards from three cottages. He adds that the inspector has served a notice for the immediate removal of this night soil and he considers that this nuisance will not occur again. He also adds that no complaint whatever had been made to the Board on this subject; otherwise it would have not needed any notice from the Home Secretary's office.
