Description: Folios 101-103. To: The General Board of Health. From: George Bailey, Clerk to the Luton Local Board, Luton [Bedfordshire]. Subject Matter: Letter referring to the parish officers of Luton who have been running their sewage and surface water either directly or indirectly into the River Lea for the past 35 to 40 years. Bailey states that although the Board are eager to stop this, they are not presently in a position to remedy this nuisance, and therefore still need to allow the sewage to run into the river. He explains that the Board are about to make new drains to improve the old ones, and consequently a larger quantity of sewage will run into the river, and that a mile away a large lake or pond formed by the River Lea has considerably deteriorated by the sewage of Luton, and it is considered that the proprietor of the lake, with the increase in sewage, will be compelled to take proceedings against the Board. He raises further questions on this subject and asks for advice on this matter.
