Description: Folios 41-43. To: The General Board of Health. From: Mr Webster, Surveyor, Wellington Street, Luton [Bedfordshire]. Subject Matter: Letter requesting advice as to how Surveyors of the town transmit their accounts to the Luton Local Board. Webster refers to the suggestion by Mr Vyse to appeal, giving an account of the exact position the surveyors are in at the present time. He explains that he did not realise that the [Public Health] Act 1848 would be in operation so soon, and he describes the circumstances that he is now in with regards to repairing and improving the district, and that no rate has been received since the surveyors have been in office, and the arrears of a former rate is now being spent. He adds that he has no wish to retain his office another day, and will transfer all to the Local Board at once, but they are not prepared to hand over monies etc., until they are free from all liabilities and demands.
