Folio 11. To: Edward Williamson, Clerk to the Justices for the Luton Division, Luton [Bedfordshire]….

Description: Folio 11. To: Edward Williamson, Clerk to the Justices for the Luton Division, Luton [Bedfordshire]. From: The General Board of Health. Subject Matter: Draft letter acknowledging receipt of a letter of the 8 March 1850 requesting to be informed in the event of an application of the Public Health Act 1848, whether it would be imperative on the Local Board to carry out the works contemplated in Mr Cresy's report, and if they should no be able to raise the requisite funds, they might depend on an advance from the Commissioners for Public Works, and if so, at what rate of interest. It is advised that the time and manner of carrying out the requisite works will be at the discretion of the Local Board, but that the consent of the General Board will be requisite to enable the Local Board to mortgage the rates. It is also advised that the Board cannot take upon themselves to state whether the Commissioners for Public Works would be ready to advance the money that the Local Board might require at some point in time, as this must depend on the funds that the Commissioners may have in hand at that time and in other circumstances not capable of being foreseen.
