Description: Folio(s) 397-401. Letter from Lord Bolton, Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, at Hackwood Park, congratulating Lord Pelham on his appointment as Home Secretary and forwarding papers relating to the concern of residents at foreigners being permitted to open businesses on the coast. Enclosed: Letter [to Bolton] of 9 August 1801 from Percival Lewis, Lymington, enclosing a copy of the notice [not present] issued by the magistrates present at the petty sessions on 1 August 1801. Also enclosed: Petition to Lord Bolton from the inhabitants of the town and neighbourhood of Lymington reporting their alarm at the prospect of an attempted landing by the enemy on their coast. Despite their wish to ensure strict enforcement of the Alien Bill, the residents declare it impossible for the inhabitants and the civil powers to check the intrusion of other foreigners who do not belong to sanctioned depots. They ask Bolton to apply for the removal of all foreigners to places further inland. Signed by Thomas Beckley, Mayor of Lymington; Percival Lewis, John Walter, Thomas Robbins, acting magistrates for the Division of New Forest East; and thirty one principal inhabitants.
