Description: Folios 185-187. To: The Local Government Act Office. From: G Hale Pickle, The College, Windermere [Westmorland]. Letter acknowledging that in a letter addressed by the Local Government Act Office to Messrs Moser, Son and Arnold, Solicitors, dated 25 November 1863, it is stated that the cost of a preliminary inquiry, with a view to the adoption of the Local Government Act 1858 at Windermere, 'would be certainly under £10'. Pickle enquires whether there are any other expenses incident to the adoption of the Act, besides those incurred in the locality for advertising and calling meetings. He further enquires whether the Act can be executed without salaried officers, 'supposing that the gratuitous service of persons in the neighbourhood can be obtained'.
