Description: Folios 259-260. To: The Local Government Act Office. From: N Jowett, Clerk to the Idle Local Board, Idle, [Yorkshire]. A letter regarding the Idle Board's ability to levy lighting rates. Jowett explains that the Idle Board have recently lit the 'town' portion of their District with gas lamps. They have consequently laid a rate to defray their lighting costs only on the parts of the District which are lit by lamps. Some have refused to pay this rate, stating that the Board do have the power to levy a rate only on a portion of their District, and they also do not have the power to levy rates for street lighting. Jowett believes that the Board have acted within their powers in both these cases and requests that the Office will confirm his view.
