Description: Prisoner name: James Harper (James Harpur) Prisoner details: Of Wheatley, Oxford. Court and date of trial: Old Bailey May Sessions 1825. Crime: Horse stealing. Initial sentence: death. Annotated: On Mr Ashurst's letter: no hope of remission; the offence of horse stealing so prevalent that some severe examples must be made and Harper's case is one of the worst which were reported to the King in Council in the last Recorder's Report. Refused. Petitioner(s): John Harper, the prisoner's father and six other family members. Grounds for clemency: Petitioners respectable inhabitants of Oxford; are filled with grief and consternations at fate of James; wife now dead leaving three young children; they ask for his life to be spared. Correspondence: Mr Fane of Weymouth Street in favour of Harper and asking that he be transported. The Earl of Macclesfield in favour of Harper.
