Description: 2 letters concerning Thomas Phillips, 11, convicted at the Oxford Quarter Sessions in July 1835, for stealing money. One letter is from W H Ashurst, Chairman of the Oxford Quarter Sessions, addressed to the Home Secretary. The other letter is from John Roberson, acquaintance of the convict's mother, and is written to Mr Hughes MP. Gaoler's report: character bad, in prison before. Grounds for clemency: the Chairman believes that the prisoner should be put in an appropriate institution that caters for such young prisoners, led astray by others. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Annotated: Nil. OV 7.
