BROOCH 92308

BROOCH 92308
Description: Incomplete copper alloy with traces of tinning, Roman P-shaped brooch with solid foot. It has a spring mechanism inside tubular wings and is missing its pin. The wingspan is 21.5mm long and the axis bar is visible at either end (surrounded by a small amount of iron staining). To the top a collared knop extends. Just below this to the front of the wings is a groove running the length of the wingspan. At the rear the coils are exposed. There are ?13 and the thread runs beneath them. The bow is D-shaped in section and extends from the bottom of the wings, the first 4mm having a concave cut-away to the front. A slight ridge marks where this ends. The bow then curves outwards and inwards again to the ankle, also with a concave cut-away section, this bond on either side by a rib and just above at the bottom of the bow is a projecting D-shaped disc, to the front only. The foot is 23mm long, trinagular in section and widens from 3.5mm at the ankle to 5mm at the foot, where it slopes downwards to the end. The brooch itself is rather chunky, but the rear of the catchplate is thin and has cracked along one side. The other side has a slight gap for the pin. The brooch is 69.5mm long and weighs 11.54g. 2nd-3rd century. It is very similar to Hattatt no.100.
