BROOCH 92287

BROOCH 92287
Description: Incomplete copper alloy Roman T-shaped brooch, missing its lower bow and catchplate, pin and integral loop. Its wingspan is 30mm and incomplete length 33mm. The wings are tubular and one end is damaged to reveal the copper alloy axis bar that runs through the centre. The reverse has patches of iron staining, presumably from a now missing iron pin. The bow extends from the top of the wings and is 14mm wide, with the broken stump of an integral loop extending upwards from the centre. The bow is slightly angled - it is flat for a length of 12mm before it curves downwards. At this point a central rib 1.5mm wide begins and runs the length of the bow, to the break. At the top of the bow, it is 2.5mm thick but this thins to 1mm thick at the break. The bow also narrows to this point, where it is 9mm wide. A deep groove flanks each side along the entire length of the bow. Either side of the central rib it is decorated with tiny incised lines in a herringbone design. The surface has a high shine and may have been tinned. Weighs 8.09g. 1st-2nd century.
