Description: A fragment of a Roman cast copper alloy brooch, possibly reverse fantail type, or the lower part of the bow of a particular type of trumpet headed brooch, dating to 1st or 2nd century AD. See Hattatt 2012 p313 fig172 for examples of reverse fantail brooches and p329 fig 188 for trumpet headed brooches with possibly similar bows. The item consists of a sub triangular piece of flat metal with a small foot (5.70mm in width) projecting forwards, the two sides of the bow arcing out from the foot to blunt points (21mm in width) from which the bow then tapers inwards again. The brooch has broken, at an early date, above this flat plate, at a point at which the rest of the bow would have extended upwards.On the underside of this plate is the catchplate, complete except for some wear damage to the pincurl. It is 21.20mm in length (from foot to break) and 21mm in width. It weighs 4.12g.
