BROOCH 851819

BROOCH 851819
Description: A post-medieval silver annular brooch dating to c.1600-1700. The frame has a constriction and a notch on opposing sides, for the pin. The maker's mark IG is stamped on the pin shank in relief, within a sub-rectangular background. The frame is solid and triangular in cross-section, the underside being flat, the upper surface being curved and the inside edge being vertical and 1.3mm high (the outside edge is 0.7mm thick). The frame is undecorated except for a pair of transverse ribs with a groove between, either side of both the constriction and the groove for the pin. The pin is rectangular in cross-section with slightly chamfered long edges. It narrows from 1.9mm wide where it curls around the constriction to 1.4mm wide at the tip, which is curved convexly with a grooved concavity to the underside. It is decorated with a trio of transverse grooves below the head; one which runs in line with the inside edge of the frame and a further two equidistant below. The maker's mark is stamped longitudinally, slightly more towards one of the long edges than the other. It measures 22.1mm in diameter (internal diameter 16.4mm), is max.3.5mm in thickness (at the head of the pin; the frame is otherwise 1.3mm thick) and weighs 1.93g.
