BROOCH 805051

Description: A copper alloy zoomorphic early medieval brooch dating to c AD 400-600. The brooch is incomplete and is missing its pin and most of the catchplate. The brooch is in the shape of a bird facing right. The 'bird' comprises a sub-oval body with an angular tail at one end. On top is a small head and on the lower edge of the body are the legs. The 'bird' is decorated with ring and dot decoration including a ring and dot for the 'bird's' eye, five ring and dots on the body and one each on the tail and feet. The back of the brooch is undecorated and there is the remnants of the transverse pin mechanism. By the 'tail' is the pin attachment loop and below the 'head' is the remnants of the catchplate.
