Description: A complete probably early medieval copper alloy scabbard chape dating to the 12th or 13th century. The object is broadly U-shaped in form, a piece of metal bar folded over on itself. It is D shaped in cross-section with elaborate terminals which may be zoomorphic in style. It is 33.80mm in length, tapering from the bulbous, U shaped base ( 9.12mm in width), designed to take the point of the weapon, to c5.25mm just below the terminals. The terminals are 21.64mm in width. There are rivet holes in the centre of each.
It weighs 8.03g. It has a mottled, pale green, patina.
