BROOCH 76393

Description: Incomplete copper alloy one-piece Colchester brooch dating from the late Iron Age to early Roman period, 15-60 AD. The wings are very short and plain and are unusual in that they are solid triangular ‘wedges’, which would be unable to curve over the spring as is normally the case. The hook to secure the missing external chord tapers very strongly and bends backwards as if a rearhook. There is a stub of the spring. The bow has a rectangular cross-section and tapers to a pointed foot (W. 4.5-0.7mm). The bow is heavily bent. Traces of the catchplate survive. The patina is red/brown. The brooch is generally in a very poor condition.
